Dream Fire Council

Join us for a weekend gathering at Twisted Roots Farm as we explore nature-based programs with other nature guides, wilderness leaders, outdoor educators, wilderness therapists, forest school leaders, eco psychologists, or anyone who has an interest in nature-based interaction, awareness, and connection.  This gathering is about opening a conversation, sharing ideas, and learning from each other about the ways in which we connect others to the beauty of the wild community.

Twisted Roots Farm is located in Judique Nova Scotia on 74 acres of forest situated along a meandering brook. Since 2017, we have been establishing a small off-grid permaculture farm and homestead from what was entirely forest when we arrived. Our collective backgrounds in social work, outdoor education, and programming have inspired us to create a farm infused nature school (Fire Dog Nature School) that we have been slowly establishing as a part of our offerings here at Twisted Roots Farm. We have also hosted volunteers and farm apprentices from around the world since 2018, sharing with them our experiences in off-grid living, permaculture, and nature-based dialogue. Our vision is to open this space to others in the spirit of learning and fostering healthy relationships with the wild, rekindling our connection with the land and the art of simple living.

Dream Fire Council will open on Friday evening as we gather around a campfire. This will be an opportunity for introductions and conversations. We will gather together as a group to open the space, setting our intentions for the upcoming days.

As we move into Saturday, we will start the day with a walk through the woods with our herd of alpine goats.  Get to know the forest and interact with these gentle creatures as we explore the woodlands of the property. The remainder of the morning schedule will be somewhat flexible as we coordinate various offerings from those attending, which will evolve as we gather interest to create a diverse schedule.  Our core conversation will take place in the format of a council fire (talking circle) scheduled for after lunch, which could possibly continue into the evening, where we will share our thoughts and feelings as we navigate our collective work and how to deliver this into a world severely disconnected from nature.

The gathering will be located in our forest site with access to our outdoor kitchen for shared meals. Additional conversations will take place around our fire council area, where we can expand on ideas and look to each of our individual practices for inspiration. Twisted Roots Farm will provide lunch and dinner on Saturday along with hot beverages and a snack both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Breakfasts are the responsibility of participants. The meals we provide will be farm-to-table from what is available and in season from the farm and other local producers. As we are a mixed farm, we raise livestock and poultry and therefore our cooking incorporates these nutrient dense foods.

Sunday will be open for other activities, presentations, or conversations to be determined as we explore interest for the gathering.   We will close the weekend before lunch with a closing activity.  Those attending are welcome to stay into the early afternoon as they pack up, say farewell to the land, and close final conversations.  Sunday lunch will be the responsibility of participants, should you wish to stay on-site for that time, with access to the outdoor kitchen.

Camping accommodations will be available on-site with either tent platforms or more wild locations on the land.  Those wishing to lodge on-site must be self-sufficient with backwoods camping and have the appropriate gear for the season.  Participants will have access to a screened outdoor kitchen for cooking or can cook with personal gear.

Those unable to attend for the entire weekend can choose to participate on Saturday only, where we will be hosting the main activities and conversation.

This gathering will be kept small and intimate as we are looking for a core group of people to join us for the entire weekend, lodging either on-site or close enough to travel to and from the farm.  We are looking to host between 6 to 8 core people for the weekend.  On Saturday, we will open the event up to additional participants, providing an opportunity for others to join us for this important and much needed conversation.

Our hope with this gathering is to connect others to nature-based work through the various offerings that we are individually carrying into the world.  This work can often feel isolating in a culture of technological speed, and coming together to engage in these conversations is so important considering the urgency of our current planetary / human situation.  We will dream together around the soothing and healing presence of the fire to explore possibilities, build relationships, and provide support to one another as we navigate this conversation within our own communities.
